Charging Forward

Published on January 13, 2022

The Tampa Bay area is known for being one of the world's lightning capitals; some historians believe the name "Tampa" translates to lightning. But the lightning found in the sky isn't the only thing that makes our area electric – Dunedin is charging forward as it continues to expand and improve electric transportation charging infrastructure within the community.

Electric Vehicles (EVs)

In 2019, the City of Dunedin partnered with Duke Energy to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations throughout the community as part of a pilot program. There are ten places to plug in around the City and re-charge while enjoying the amenities Dunedin offers. You can plug in your EV while taking an art class at the Dunedin Fine Art Center or refuel your vehicle while you also refuel by grabbing a bite to eat downtown.

Charging stations around the City vary in type. See the table below, which outlines the charging locations, the type of chargers at that location, the number of charging ports, and the average length of time it takes to charge. You can also utilize the Dunedin EV Map . To view availability or start a charging session for your EV, download the ShellRecharge app on your mobile device or use your RFID card.

Since this is a pilot program, charging stations may experience outages or connection issues. For 24/7 technical support, please call 866-417-9995. For further program inquiries, visit the Dunedin Green Scene or contact the Sustainability Program Coordinator at ngass@dunedinfl.net.

Golf Carts

You may think a golf cart can charge at an EV charging station, but this is not true. EV charging stations are incompatible with golf carts, e-bikes, and e-scooters. Since golf carts charge differently, you may wonder where to plug in.

Golf cart charging stations are located at the Dunedin Public Library and the Monroe Street Parking Garage. To use the outlet, you will need to bring the charging cord for your personal golf cart with you. Please note that this is simply a 120-volt outlet and will provide a slow charge to your golf cart. Some outlets may be on set timers and turn off once the facility has closed.

As golf carts expand in popularity, a Golf Cart & Micro-Mobility Infrastructure Plan is being proposed within the upcoming budget. This study would review the existing golf cart program, recommend changes, and consider other micro-mobility trends for inclusion and infrastructure needs for charging and repair services. Visit the Golf Carts page for more Dunedin-specific information.

We look forward to a future full of sustainable solutions and electric action!
