Safety Improvements Coming to Skinner Blvd and Pinellas Trail Intersection

A new traffic signal has been constructed at the intersection of Skinner Boulevard and the Pinellas Trail. The signal will work in coordination with the light at Broadway, the intersection west of the Pinellas Trail.

Vehicles and trail users may only enter the intersection with the appropriate indication.

The trail user will need to stop and press the pedestrian button to allow the signal to change. The signal will be operational before the end of March, and the Sheriff’s Office will be monitoring to ensure compliance.

This signal is only temporary until the completion of the Complete Streets project, where Skinner Boulevard will be redesigned with roundabouts and one travel lane in each direction.

FDOT Designing Complete Streets Concept for Skinner/Trail
Long-Term – Scheduled to Begin in 2024

Recognizing the importance of safety regarding the Pinellas Trail crossing at Skinner and safety in general for vehicles and pedestrians, the City of Dunedin has undertaken a Complete Streets concept for Skinner Boulevard (section of Alt 19 to Bass Boulevard).

The planned improvements currently under design by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) call for Skinner Boulevard to undergo a lane diet from four lanes to two lanes with roundabouts at the intersections of Highland Avenue and Douglas Avenue.

In addition to the lane reduction and traffic circles, the enhancements will also feature an independent multi-purpose path connecting to the Pinellas Trail for cyclists and walkers to use.

The improvements scheduled to start in 2024 will make for safer passage of the many forms of multi-transportation, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists, and stimulating economic development.

It is important to note to move forward with the Complete Street design, comprehensive engineering and forecasting have taken place to evaluate the current and future traffic trips on this section of Skinner Boulevard.
