Complete Streets

On December 14th Dunedin’s City Commission adopted Resolution 21-31 supporting the implementation of Forward Pinellas’ “Safe Streets Pinellas Action Plan".  So, what does the resolution really mean?

The resolution shows a commitment from the City of Dunedin to work with Forward Pinellas in achieving the goal of reducing traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries in the region; ultimately reaching the goal of zero deaths and serious injuries, also known as “Vision Zero,” by the year 2045. One way to work towards “Vision Zero” is through the concept of creating “Complete Streets.”

What is “Complete Streets?”

In Dunedin’s “Strive for 2035 Comprehensive Plan,” Complete Streets is a concept that provides safe, convenient access for users of all modes of transportation, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders of all ages and abilities. These streets are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users to:

  • Walk or bike to work or school safely by providing easy access to cross streets;
  • Reduce traffic congestion by offering transportation alternatives to driving; and
  • Allow transit to operate on time and provide safe access to and from stops/stations.

Complete Streets not only provides safe access for all users, it also:

  • Promotes healthy communities by providing better access to parks, trails and businesses from residential neighborhoods through alternate modes of transportation, and less cars on the streets;
  • Impacts the environment through the reduction of carbon emissions by encouraging public modes of transportation such as PSTA, Jolley Trolley, Tiki Ride, and the Clearwater-Dunedin Ferry; all providing better access and connectivity;
  • Promotes economic development by encouraging pedestrian activity that supports local businesses, expands employment opportunities, and supports reinvestment in the local economy.
