Solid Waste 101

Published on October 01, 2023

The City Of Dunedin is proud to have a Solid Waste team that serves the community with care. Whether you’ve lived in Dunedin for decades or are new in town, it’s always great to refresh your knowledge on solid waste and recycling services!

Set-Up and What’s Accepted
For curbside single-family residents’ garbage, recycling, and yard/bulk waste that is collected once a week on the same designated day, please see the table and graphic below for details.

What time should the garbage and recycling roll-carts be placed at the curb?
The night before your service day! Did you know 3 collection trucks service your home every service day, and they start early! Growing accustomed to a set collection time can cause a missed pick-up. Route patterns periodically change for many reasons.

What goes in the green garbage roll-cart?
Pretty much anything except construction debris. NEVER toss hazardous or flammable waste in your roll-carts. Pinellas County has free drop offs for hazardous waste. Do not place bags of food waste outside of the roll-cart. If you have extra, call Dunedin Solid Waste for an extra pickup.

What goes in the blue recycling roll-cart?
Mixed (loose) recycling! Check your lid label for an approved list of items and visit the Dunedin Recycling webpage for more information! Stick to the sticker! Never bag your recyclables.

How much yard and bulk waste can be placed at the curb for weekly collections?
Up to 20 sturdy bags of leaves, weighing less than 50 lbs. each. Yard debris bagged, bundled or in a container, no more than 50 lbs. each or exceeding over 4 cubic yards overall. Up to two pieces of furniture. No TVs. Call to set up a special pick-up for appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines.

Garbage - Green/Black Can
The green/black garbage can is serviced by an AUTOMATED side-arm truck provided by Dunedin Solid Waste The capacity is 7-9 standard size kitchen garbage bags. Dispose of household waste only; this includes food items non hazardous, pet waste, and non-recyclable materials.
The contents of this can are taken to Pinellas County Waste to-Energy facility to be turned into electricity.

Recycling - Blue Can
The blue recycling can is serviced by an AUTOMATED side-arm truck and is currently being provided by Waste Pro The lid of the cart provides a helpful recycling guide. No plastic bags, yard debris, construction debris, or food waste. The contents are taken to a sorting facility to be processed before being recycled.

Yard Waste/Bulky Items
Yard waste & bulky curbside items are serviced by a MANUAL rear-1oad truck provided by Dunedin Solid Waste. Place yard waste in personal containers OR leaf bags OR in small manageable piles. Place bulky items such as furniture, boxes or old toys at the curb. The contents are taken to an aggregate sorting facility.

Please place items curbside the night before collections and remove carts from the curb by the morning following collection day. If you have service or disposal questions, contact Dunedin Solid Waste at 727-298-3215.

Safety
Did you know that collecting garbage & recycling is the top 6th most dangerous job in the United States? Do your part to keep drivers and equipment safe!

  • Slow down and use extreme caution when driving around a collection truck.
  • Never place hazardous or flammable items inside your roll-carts. Always bring those items to the Pinellas County Solid Waste Household Electronics & Chemical Collection Center (HEC3) or to one of their monthly Saturday events.
  • Never place plastic bags or bagged recyclables in the recycling roll-cart.

Hurricane Prep
Add solid waste to your hurricane prep list! Refrain from putting fencing, yard debris, and other loose items at the curb in the event of a hurricane. A best practice is not to do last minute yard work but properly prune trees and shrubs well before any storms threaten. Do not set out roll-carts or piles of branches that can become projectiles in high winds.
