The City Commission designated Monday, August 7, 2006 as Purple Heart Recognition Day. Commander Jim Randles, National Commander for the Military Order of the Purple Heart was at the August 8th Commission Meeting to bestow the honor on Dunedin as the country's first Purple Heart City. Danny Sowder, of the Clearwater Chapter of the group, initiated the selection of Dunedin for the honor. Dunedin Postmaster Allene Doggett presented a framed poster-size replica of the recently released Purple Heart postage stamp. The poster hangs in a place of honor in City Hall. Warren Schroeder, representing VFW Post 2550, and Steve Beaty representing the National Armed Forces Services and Law Enforcement Museum and State Representative Tom Anderson were also present. On August 7, 2008 the city dedicated Purple Heart Park and Monument (at the corner of Main St. and Alternate 19) in honor of the city leading the way as the first Purple Heart City in the country. Veterans and community groups, businesses and individuals raised more than $11,000 to build the Purple Heart Monument.
