Residential Services

The City of Dunedin, Solid Waste Division provides twice per week collection of garbage and yard waste for $18.50 per month. Large items, such as furniture and appliances, electronic waste, and oversized brush and yard waste piles can be placed curbside for collection as well, although surcharges may apply. Placement of any materials in public rights-of-way is done so as an implicit request for municipal service and shall be removed from public rights-of-way by the Solid Waste Division for the health, safety, and welfare of the public. Collection and disposal of refuse in public rights-of-way in excess of service quantities specified by city ordinance shall be performed at additional charge (Resolution no. 06-40). Residents are required to use a City provided automated container. Please place all items to be collected at the curb no earlier than 7:00 p.m. the night before collection, but before 6:30 a.m. the day of collection. Containers should be removed from the curb by 7:00 p.m. the day of collection. Please call 298-3215 for your specific collection days.

Tips for using the automated collection system.

  1. Please leave at least three feet of clearance between your automated container and any other object, such as other cans, mailboxes, poles, and vehicles and so on. Place the container with the arrow on the lid pointing towards the street and place the container no more than two feet from the curb.

  2. Please completely fill the automated container before placing yard waste or loose items at the curb. All household trash must be in your automated container. Household garbage outside of your automated container will not be collected. Additional automated containers are available for residents generating higher volumes of household garbage. Please contact Solid Waste for an additional automated container ($9.25 / month additional - $10.25 unincorporated areas).

  3. Large items, such as mattresses, furniture, boxes and appliances (a $17.11 charge applies for each appliance), that will not fit in the automated container can be placed at the curb on your normal collection day, and will be collected, free of charge. It is assumed that appliances and electronic waste placed in the right of way are there for collection and disposal and will be picked up by Solid Waste crews. Subsequent disposal and handling fees that may apply will be charged to your utility billing account. Please leave at least three feet of clearance and place the items at the curb by 6:30 a.m. Help our crews identify your appliances and electronics by marking each with your house number when placed at the curb.

  4. Yard waste will be collected twice per week on your normal collection days. Grass clippings and leaves can be placed at the curb in bags or 32 gallon cans (not to exceed 50 lbs each), please leave at least 3 feet of clearance from these items and your automated container. Brush materials must be cut in 4 foot lengths and tied in bundles under 50 pounds to be collected on your normal collection days. Brush piles in excess of 2 cubic yards and/or not bundled may be collected at an additional charge to the resident (see price schedule below, under clean-up containers). Please call for a site visit and estimate.

  5. Building materials not acceptable at the resource recovery plant will require an additional charge to be collected curbside, or must be removed privately by the owner. The Solid Waste Division provides various size clean-up containers for building materials. Please see clean-up containers (below) for sizes and rates.

Clean-up Containers ('dumpsters') - C & D Recycling

The Solid Waste Division provides various size containers for general clean-up or construction debris. The division uses a variety of disposal methods to manage the waste generated from clean-up and construction projects, and always attempts to recycle construction and demolition (C&D) debris. To accomplish this, the division delivers all C&D material to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) permitted by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for materials recovery, storing, and recycling of C&D debris and Class III materials.

The division has several sizes and rates to fit the needs of the city's residents and businesses. All rates quoted below are flat rate charges that include delivery and tonnage disposal fees. Overweight charges may apply for 10, 20, and 30 yard containers that exceed the weight limits indicated. There are no daily rental fees for the first two (2) weeks, and all charges can be billed through your Dunedin Utility Bill. Please call for more information.

Household Chemical and Electronics

Household chemicals and electronics require special handling and are becoming increasingly harder to dispose of. Electronic devices such as televisions, computers, and VCR's contain heavy metals and gases that cannot be disposed of using traditional methods, and should be separated from the waste stream. The City of Dunedin's Solid Waste Division provides convenient collection of electronics (E-waste) on your regular collection day. It is assumed that E-waste and appliances placed in the right of way are there for collection and disposal, and will be picked up by Solid Waste crews. Subsequent disposal and handling fees that may apply will be charged to your utility billing account. A list of electronics considered hazardous can be found here.

It is illegal to dispose of the following materials in your container and at curbside: tires, auto batteries, pool chemicals, toxic or flammable items or liquid paint. Paint cans will get crushed and leak onto your streets. Leave lids off latex paint cans to allow the paint to dry out, or saturate with newspaper, then place in container. Handling surcharges may apply to residents and customers found mixing unacceptable materials with their solid waste.

Oil-based paint, chemicals/solvents, and electronics can be disposed of at the County's Household Electronics & Chemical Collection Center, or at a scheduled mobile chemical collection event.

Technical Management Committee

Pinellas County operates under the 1975 Solid Waste Disposal and Resource Recovery Act, which was codified as Chapter 106 (Solid Waste) of the Pinellas County Code in 1988. The Act provides the authority and responsibility for countywide disposal of solid waste to Pinellas County.

The Solid Waste Disposal and Resource Recovery Act also created the Technical Management Committee (TMC) requiring representation from all of the Municipalities and the County to review and make recommendations regarding rates, fees, policies, programs, integration of new technologies, selection of consultants, etc. The TMC function provides an ongoing, collaborative and successful relationship among the service provider and the recipients of the service.

The City of Dunedin, through its Solid Waste Division, is an active member of the Pinellas County Technical Management Committee (TMC). See www.pinellascounty.org/tmc for more information on the TMC.
