BUTTERFLY GARDEN AT THE
DUNEDIN NATURE CENTER

Our educational garden contains nectar plants for adult butterflies and hummingbirds, and food plants for butterfly caterpillars. In 1997 the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. designated the garden as a butterfly sanctuary. Seven different species of butterflies have been raised from caterpillars for the education of participants in our summer camps, the Investigators of Nature Club, and our visiting school groups.

Public programs are periodically offered on butterfly identification, raising butterflies, and planting and maintaining a butterfly garden. Volunteers are welcome to assist in propagating and planting plants for the garden and in maintaining it.

SENSORY GARDEN FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED
AT THE NATURE CENTER

Adjacent to the Butterfly Garden is the Sensory Garden for the Visually Impaired. The garden is a joint project between the Bay Bouquet Garden Club and the Dunedin Parks Division. It was constructed with donations from private individuals and the Clearwater Evening Lions Club. Plants of varying textures and sizes line a winding concrete walkway with nameplates in English and Braille affixed to a wooden rail above each plant. The plants are located so visitors can easily touch and smell them. Nearby is a water fountain and park bench. The garden is open all daylight hours for the visually impaired as well as the sighted.
